Overview

The department of Crop Science includes various disciplines of Agricultural sciences viz.Horticulture, Genetics and Plant Breeding, Agril. Biochemistry, Plant Pathology, Entomology and Agricultural Botany under which undergraduate and P.G. students are offered fundamental and advanced courses for training them as future agricultural scientists and subject matter specialists. The students are trained in propagation techniques, nursery management, post harvest management of vegetable and horticultural crops, hybridization techniques in major field crops, seed production, certification and testing technology, plant protection measures, conservation, multiplication and utilization of medicinal and aromatic plants with their therapeutic value and industrial use, The department also offers post graduate programmes in Horticulture and Genetics & Plant Breeding where in students are provided in-depth knowledge of fundamental and advance courses of the respective subjects  along with research work to develop their professional skill as future horticulturist and plant breeders in order to ensure food and nutritional security in the country.

Agricultural graduate and post- graduate students in Horticulture and Genetics and Plant Breeding are in great demand in teaching, research and extension in Agricultural Universities and ICAR Institutes, Departments of Agriculture and Horticulture of State Governments, Fertilizer companies, in Banking services and in private sector-Seed, Pesticide and Multinational Companies

Mission:

To impart quality education in Agricultural Sciences to under-graduate and post- graduate students through teaching, research and outreach programs designed to foster knowledge and competence of the students.

Vision:

To train students with technical skills in diversified aspects of horticulture, crop improvement, plant protection and biochemical and physiological technologies and seed technology.

Objectives:

Ø To provide education and technology to the students in floriculture, olericulture and pomology under horticulture and also to the Agricultural officers and farmers of the state.

Ø To provide education and technologies of Agro- techniques and processing for medicinal and aromatic plants.

Ø Livelihood strategies for landless and marginal farmers through innovative biomass strategies, post harvest technologies and seed production technologies.

Ø Creation of Hi-Tech resource centre in respect of horticultural plantlet and forest produce for the farmers.

Ø To provide advanced technologies for efficient utilization of farm produce including- fruits, vegetables and other materials available at village level.

¨ M.Sc. Ag. Horticulture- at P.G level.

¨ M.Sc. Ag. Genetics & Plant Breeding

¨ Ph.D. in Horticulture, Genetics and Plant Breeding Biochemistry, Agril Botany, Entomology and Plant Pathology disciplines.
